Dan Goldie is an independent financial advisor, #1 New York Times bestselling author, and former professional tennis player. One of his most influential accomplishments is The Investment Answer, the bestselling book he coauthored in 2011 with Gordon Murray. Now published in 10 languages and used by financial advisors around the world to educate their clients, The Investment Answer describes, in plain English, the five key decisions every investor needs to make. The success of this book and his business has given Dan a platform to publicly promote ideas he believes are important. These include independent, fee-only financial advice, fiduciary duty for advisors, and asset class investing.
Dan grew up in McLean, Virginia were he excelled in school and sports. At age 7, his father became an alcoholic and his parents eventually divorced. Dan used this adversity to fuel his drive to achieve and make a better life for himself. He became one of the nation’s top junior tennis players and attended Stanford University on a tennis scholarship, where his won the 1986 NCAA singles title and graduated with a degree in economics.
After graduation, Dan had a brief but successful professional tennis career. In three years, he won four professional titles, reached the quarterfinals of Wimbledon, the round of 16 of the U.S. Open, and the round of 16 at the Australian Open. After achieving a career-high singles ranking of 27 in the world in 1989, he developed stress fractures in both shins and had to retire from competitive play two years later. Dan did not play tennis again for 24 years, but began competing again in 2015 when he won the over 50 U.S. national hard and grass court singles titles.
Motivated by his desire to help people achieve financial security, Dan became an independent financial advisor in 1991. He started from scratch with no clients or assets under management. In these early years, he committed himself to bringing on new clients and completing an advanced financial education. His business grew steadily and he earned the prestigious Chartered Financial Analyst designation, the CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER certification, and an M.B.A. from U.C. Berkeley’s Walter A. Haas School of Business.
Dan has been acknowledged for his business achievements in many ways. He has been recognized by the San Francisco Business Times as one of the top 25 Bay Area independent advisors.
