Dirk Gilliard is an independent financial advisor and financial planner helping individual investors and families make smart decisions and realize their investment goals. With clients throughout the country, Dirk takes an educational, consultative approach to providing advice. He incorporates the principles of modern finance as well as academic and professional research to help guide his clients through the often complex and counterintuitive world of investing and personal finance.
Dirk has an extensive and diverse 24-year career in financial services. He has worked on the floor of the Pacific Stock Exchange, managed complex investment accounting software, and marketed institutional investment services to the world’s biggest investors. Having seen all aspects of the traditional investment industry, highlighted by his time working for the retail brokerage division of a Wall Street Bank, Dirk realized that the industry’s hard-sales tactics and many conflicts of interest did not serve clients well and was inconsistent with his personal values.
It was then that Dirk learned about asset class investing and decided to build a business around what saw as a better way to invest and help clients achieve their financial goals. Starting with only a handful of clients, he founded his own investment advisory firm 2008, and then joined as a partner with Dan Goldie Financial Services in 2011.
Dirk was raised in Marin, California. As a young man, he learned early the lessons of hard work and self-reliance and developed a desire to help others. While working throughout high school to help his family financially, Dirk found time to become an elite swimmer and water polo player. He played water polo for U.C. Berkeley as a walk-on and graduated in 1990 with a degree in Political Economy after being accepted to Berkeley’s International & Area Studies Academic Program.
Dirk is passionate about coaching and helping those less fortunate. He
volunteers extensively for philanthropic organizations that share this core value. Since 2009, Dirk has served as a member of the board of advisors for the Salvation Army of San Francisco. He is also a senior member of the Guardsmen of San Francisco, a group dedicated helping Bay Area at-risk youth.
Dirk and his wife, Nicole, reside in Los Altos with their two boys. He enjoys traveling, cycling, skiing, ski mountaineering, and swimming with Stanford Masters.
